Sometimes photos tell a story that is different than the one intended. They’re taken in one context but consumed in another. Today, the Flickr blog features a set of photos from the U.S. National Archives taken in May 1973. From the set:
Wil Blanche’s DOCUMERICA assignment took him to New York City and Westchester County where he took pictures of landfills, water pollution and the rapidly changing Lower Manhattan skyline. Among his photographs are images of the newly completed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
I have collected nine of the photos here. They simply stop my breath. Wil’s full set reminds of another America, struggling to keep its innocence through Watergate, the energy crisis and flailing economy.
Nine photos—one for each year since terrorist attacks destroyed the towers on this day in 2001.
