My blog just turned 2! Hosted at tumblr, it has. Tumblr sent an email reminding me of the birthday and offering to share about it with followers; hence this partially canned birthday post.
Timing is interesting. On March 31, I moved Oddly Together from hosted WordPress at MediaTemple to Tumblr. Three reasons:
- MediaTemple proved unsuccessful resolving ongoing database errors
- Microblogging better fits my style of blogging, going back more than 7 years
- Tumblr has matured as a blogging service and as a social publishing platform
Oddly Together will really begin to evolve over the next couple months, with increasing emphasis on storytelling and broadening of topics as I tweak content for the audience—whatever that turns out to be.. Any technology blogging will shift to either cultural, sociological or journalism topics. The hard technology analysis, commentary or news reporting will continue (as it has, on a freelance basis) at Betanews. I am not abandoning Betanews or my established audience. I’ll will continue writing about Apple and Microsoft for Betanews.
I had planned to blog about this Tumblr transition next week, but the birthday celebration is timely. Oddly Together content currently goes back to 2003. I’ve imported a bunch of stuff from several iterations of my old joewilcox.com and prior iteration Oddly Together blogs—stuff that topically has long shelf life or would be appropriate for the new direction. Most of the joewilcox.com content is from before 2008 and had been offline for years. I’ve found more in old archives that will be posted over the coming weeks.
So it’s a big birthday bash here at Tumblr, hopefully with many more to come.
